Dr. Okundaye was born and raised in Las Vegas, NV. After high school she attended Florida State University (FSU) with an academic scholarship. At FSU she majored in anthropology and pre-dentistry. After college Dr. Okundaye decided to seek training in dentistry.
Amanda graduated from Meharry Medical College, School of Dentistry; Nashville, TN. After obtaining her dental degree (D.D.S. - Doctor of Dental Surgery) she attended an Advanced Education in General Dentistry program with the Lutheran Medical Center; Tucson, AZ. There she greatly enjoyed practicing dentistry with the implementation of conscious sedation. Amanda was then accepted to a Hospital Dentistry program at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). During her one year Hospital Dentistry residency she became even more interested in anesthesia and medicine.
Dr. Okundaye was then accepted to a two year Dental Anesthesiology program at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she completed her residency.
Dr. Okundaye joined the faculty at the University of Southern California (USC) in 2006 as a clinical faculty member in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dental Anesthesiology.
She is a member of numerous local and national professional organizations including the American Dental Society of Dental Anesthesiology, American Dental Association, American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists and the Christian Medical and Dental Association.
Dr. Dave Carsten is a native of Washington state. He earned a degree in Biochemistry from Washington State University and his DDS from University of Washington (1984).
He practiced restorative dentistry for 24 years and taught prosthodontics at Oregon Health Sciences University Dental School for 13 years. He focused his last 5 years of practice on the treatment of chronic fear patients and IV sedation. Dave is currently completing his year #1 of a Dental Anesthesiology residency at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. Dr. Carsten is a Master in the Academy of General Dentistry, a Fellow in the Academy of Dentistry International, and a Fellow of the American College of Dentists.
He was presented with the Award of Distinction in Continuing Education for 2006 by the Academy of Dentistry International. Dr. Carsten has authored several papers regarding color perception. He has spoken more than 100 times on various topics. He looks forward to returning to practice in 2010 as a Dental Anesthesiologist.
Brian Chanpong, DDS MSc (Dental Anesthesia) completed his undergraduate dental degree at the University of Southern California and a three year hospital based residency in anesthesia at the University of Toronto. He is a diplomate of both the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology and the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology and is a certified specialist in dental anesthesia (Ontario). At the Faculty of Dentistry, University of British Columbia, he is the course director for local anesthesia and minimal sedation. As a member of the accreditation committee at the College of Dental Surgeons of BC, he is on the inspection team that accredits general anesthesia facilities for dentistry. Dr. Chanpong maintains an out-patient anesthesia clinic that provides general anesthesia and sedation services for dentists in Vancouver, BC.
George J. McAlpine DDS MS, Director, Dental General Practice Residency, University of Nevada School of Medicine
Dr McAlpine graduated from the Loyola University School of Dentistry, Maywood, Illinois in 1974. Upon graduation, he entered the US Air Force. He completed a two year General Dentistry residency in 1979 at the University of Texas, Health Sciences Center, Houston and Wilford Hall Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas. He is board certified by the American Board of General Dentistry and the Federal Services Board of General Dentistry. He was responsible for running two Dental Residency programs and three Air Force Dental clinics during his distinguished, 25 year career in the USAF. Dr McAlpine has been actively performing moderate sedation for 30+ years. Upon retirement in 1999 from Nellis AFB, NV, he entered private practice (briefly) in Tucson, AZ. Missing Las Vegas, he returned when offered the opportunity to become the Director of the Dental General Practice Residency program, part of the University of Nevada School of Medicine. He has been the Director since Nov 1999. He is an Associate Professor and the Associate Dean for Dental Medicine.
Dr. Kenneth Lee is a graduate of the University of Southern California School of Dentistry. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1989. During his dental school education, Dr. Lee was selected by world-renowned educator Stanley F. Malamed, in a special 2-year program that trained him in intravenous sedation. While in this program, Dr. lee was also responsible for teaching local anesthesia, nitrous oxide sedation and CPR to fellow dental students.
Upon receiving his D.D.S. degree, Dr. Lee entered the general anesthesia residency program at Loma Linda University Medical Center. After extensive training in the operating rooms of the hospital and dental surgery center, he received his certificate in anesthesiology in 1990.
He is a fellow of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology and is a diplomat of the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology. He is currently an assistant associate professor at the U.S.C. School of Dentistry and teaches I.V. sedation to dentists throughout the world. He continues to train Dr. Malamed’s I.V. sedation dental students at Solis Surgical Arts Center, an offsite teaching facility for the U.S.C. School of Dentistry. He is also co-director of Advanced Anesthesia Seminars, where he teaches general dentists, periodontists, oral surgeons, medical and dental anesthesiologists advanced I.V sedation, airway management, and emergency anesthesia protocol. He is an examiner for the onsite conscious sedation and general anesthesia accreditation program for the State of California.
